Our Story

Saracina, a 250-acre ranch which includes a winery and sustainably farmed vineyards, is also home to 140-year-old olive trees, vegetable gardens, bee hives, and all manner of bird and wild animal life. The handcrafted, limited production Saracina wines reflect a conscious sense of this beautiful estate in Mendocino County.

Originally founded by husband and wife team John Fetzer and Patty Rock in 2001, Saracina has always been defined by a strong sense of family. In 2018, Marc Taub took on stewardship of Saracina, upholding the spirit of family ownership that has defined this iconic Mendocino County winery since inception.

OUR RANCH

Saracina is a Certified California Sustainable (CSWA) winery and vineyard located in Hopland, in the southern part of Mendocino County about 30 miles north of Healdsburg.

Saracina cultivates 40 acres of vineyards on six different parcels. The soils vary greatly from rocky to black clay and gravelly loam, allowing for the cultivation of numerous varieties including Chardonnay, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. This area has wet winters and dry summers with very warm days and cool nights providing for ripe, plush fruit to be balanced by firm acidity.

OUR HERITAGE

The third generation of his family immersed in the world of wine, Marc operates two highly-regarded import companies representing wines from top appellations around the globe. Over the last six years, he has also been cultivating a small portfolio of domestic wines from Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino. Together with winemaker Alex MacGregor and the team at the beautiful Saracina Ranch, Marc and his family are thrilled to take on leadership of the estate and carry on the values and quality that have defined Saracina since the beginning. “Wine has been the centerpiece of my family’s narrative, and our livelihood, driven by hard work and dedication across multiple generations. My grandfather Marty played an instrumental role in the California wine business from the very moment that Prohibition was repealed, and my father David later joined his side to build upon his dream. I grew up with a deep appreciation for the art of winemaking, and all the wonderful elements and camaraderie intrinsic to this fascinating world. I’m excited to see what the fourth generation brings in the future, in the hands of my son Jake [pictured below left] and daughter Chloe.”
